Welcome to Saint Luke's School! We feel very blessed to be a part of this community! We look forward to working with you to make this year a memorable and successful one for your children.
Classroom Management
On the first day of school, the students worked together to make a list of rules they thought were important for our classroom. We have posted our rules in the classroom and promised to work hard to follow the rules the best we can. First grade is a year of maturity and growth, especially in self control. We will be encouraging the children to work on on this skill through a classroom management that includes both rewards and accountablity for their actions.
Homework
For many students, homework is a new experience. Please assist your child in forming a positive attitude toward homework and valuing its importance. First graders will receive anywhere from 5-15 minutes of homework per night, Monday - Thursday. Please check your child's homework for accuracy. If you notice your child struggling with a concept, please email their teacher so she can provide additional instruction. Please intitial all completed homwork and return to school the following day. We will check homework for completion. Homework that not completed will be finished during recess.
Assessment
Your child will be assessed in a variety of ways during first grade. To eliminate testing anxiety, children are not notified of upcoming assessments except for spelling tests. We will be sending home test folders approximately every two weeks. Please review all test papers, initial, and move the papers from the left pocket to the right. Please do not remove any assessment from the folder. If you have any questions regarding an assessment, please contact the teacher at your convenience.
Communication
The best way to contact us is through a written note or an email. We will attempt to respond quickly but please know there are days when we do not even get a chance to check email until after school. Please send written notes or email regarding line changes and absences as these must be kept on file. If there is an emergency or last minute line change during the school day, please notify the office also and they will contact the classroom over the intercom.
Reading - Reading is a large component of the first grade curriculum. We will be building reading skills throughout the year using the ScottForesman Reading Street series, as well as leveled readers and books from our classroom library. Instruction takes place in both whole group and small group settings. Each week new phonics skills are introduced and a new story is read. We will use these fiction and non-fiction texts to focus on character, story elements, fact and opinion, main idea and details, summarizing, and sequencing to build strong comprehension skills.
Spelling - Students will have a list of twelve spelling words each week that are based on the weekly phonics skills. Children are required to study every night in preparation for the spelling test at the end of the skills week.
Writing - The first grade will be using The Units of Study Series for our Writing Curriculum. The program includes minilessons, small-group work, independent writing, partner conferencing, and whole class sharing sessions. We will be writing narratives, informational, and opinion pieces.
Penmanship- The first grade uses the Palmer method of straight lines and circles. It is VERY important that your child hold the pencil correctly and that they start from the top of the line and pull the letters down (research shows a connection to writing topdown and reading). Children are encouraged to be neat.
In first grade children learn how to add and subtract using many different strategies. They will be able to solve problems using manipulatives, equations, and illustrations. The first grade students will also learn about place value, how to tell time, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Children will be assessed on math reasoning and computation.
This year, the children will work towards forming a closer relationship with God and understanding how much he loves us. We do this through discussion, prayer, and classroom projects. We use Sadlier We Believe series.
At the first grade level, children learn how to recite the Sign of the Cross, The Hail Mary, and The Lord's Prayer. We will be introducing the Holy Family and the life of Jesus. We attend a school liturgy monthly, and present the First Friday Mass in May.
Science is taught but not graded at the first grade level. Our main topics of exploration are animals and their habitats, plant and how they grow, and the study of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. We use both discussion and experimaentation/exploration to learn about the world around us. We also take advantage of the science lab that is the upper building for some of our experiments.
Our focus in Social Studies is on building community through shared practices, customs, traditions, and beliefs. We will look at historic individuals, events, and symbols that are important to our communities, both large and small. We also discuss how we can be good citizens in our our family, school, and neighborhood communities.
Social Studies is not graded at this age level.
