Our Language Arts Curriculum is broken up into two classes: Reading and Writing.
In Reading, we focus on fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and dramas in our textbooks and novels. Students learn how to make inferences and identify story elements, themes, context clues, and figurative language. Students focus on vocabulary development and word study of root words and affixes.
In Writing, we use a Writer’s Workshop approach to create Personal Narratives, Literary Essays, and Informational Essays. Students learn about the writing process, comparing and contrasting, researching, and citing evidence. Students also concentrate on the parts of speech, types of sentences, sentence structure, and other elements of grammar.
The Reading and Writing Classes also focus on Listening and Speaking. Students have multiple public speaking opportunities in both whole class settings and small group activities.
Sixth grade uses Sadlier Math textbooks and workbooks. Instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.
Sixth grade uses the Sadlier We Believe series to continue our faith journey. The emphasis this year will be on getting to know God as he reveals Himself through the Bible. We will study the kings, prophets, and judges of the Old Testament and explore how they brought the Chosen People into a covenant with God. We will also focus on how we can form and strengthen our relationship with God through prayer and knowledge of the Saints.

In sixth grade social studies the curriculum is based on the history and geography of the Eastern Hemisphere, including the development of cultures, civilizations, and empires, interaction between societies, and the comparison of trends in government and economics. It also incorporates elements of some of the social sciences. We will look into the establishment of early kingdoms, their decline, and the rise of new rulers that helped shape the world during early times.
