7th grade English builds upon grammar and writing skills learned in previous years in preparation for our students’ transition into high school. Vocabulary is taught throughout the year, utilizing the vocabulary workbook and words from reading selections. In addition, various literary genres and devices are explored. Novels include sections from Hamilton’s Mythology, Lois Lowry's The Giver, and the non-fiction Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl.
Seventh grade uses the Sadlier-Oxford Fundamentals of Algebra textbook and workbook. Instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) interpreting expressions, inequalities, and equations to solve problems; (2) understanding the different types of rational and irrational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing and using ratio and statistics; and (4) using “real life math”, which includes consumer application, sales tax, and interest.
In seventh grade religion the curriculum will venture into the meaning of Jesus and God in the students’ lives. Students will seek out ways to become closer to God, Jesus, and the role they play today in the Church and their purpose in our faith. Students will also be participating in the Holy Sacrament of Confirmation and understanding the importance of their new role in the Church community.
Cells & Heredity, Diversity of Living Things, and Ecology & the Environment all make up the 7th grade Life Science curriculum.
Cells & Heredity includes the Scientific Method, Microscope Use, Cell Structure & Function, Plant and Animal Systems, and Heredity and Growth.
Diversity of Living Things includes: Fossil Records, Genetic Change and Traits, Natural Selection, Artificial Selection and Genetic Engineering.
Ecology & the Environment includes: Energy in Ecosystems, Photosynthesis, Ecosystems, and Biodiversity.
In seventh grade social studies the curriculum is based on early American history ranging from the early Mesoamerican civilizations and Spanish colonization, all the way to the pre-Civil War period. The students will analyze the decades of American colonization and the rise of America as an independent nation from the Revolutionary War. Furthermore, students will explore the functions of the U.S. government as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.
