Physical education classes teach students the benefits of being physically active. The Kindergarten through eighth grade curriculum is based on national and state standards for PE and includes movement skills, physical activity, and safety and personal responsibilities skills. Sportsmanship is emphasized as well as cooperation and healthy conflict resolution. Each class begins with student-composed and led prayer.
Movement skills for the Kindergarten through second grade range include running and tag games, cooperative activities, and beginning ball handling games.
In grades three through five the movement activities cover a range of motor, non-motor and manipulative skills. Students assess themselves on physical fitness at the beginning and end of the school year and note improvements made. There are a wide range of activities from yoga and fitness to problem-solving, individual and partner critical thinking challenges, and some team sports.
In grade six through eight the students build upon their skills in a wide variety of games and sports. They do individual and partner activities and have more team sports. Partner and individual problem-solving activities are also done.
Students assess their physical fitness several times through the year to find areas for improvement and note their strengths. There is also a PE project to give the students a chance to design their own warm-up or game.
